Did You Know?🌴Puerto Ricans Are U.S. Citizens Too! 🙌

A Little History for Families and Classrooms🌟

When you think about American history, you probably picture the 50 states — but did you know there’s an island full of sunshine, salsa, and strong community spirit that’s been part of the U.S. for over a century? ☀️🌴

That’s right — Puerto Ricans have been U.S. citizens since 1917!

It all started with the Jones-Shafroth Act, which granted citizenship to everyone born on the island of Puerto Rico. That means Boricuas (as Puerto Ricans lovingly call themselves) have carried U.S. citizenship — and pride — for more than 100 years. 🇺🇸💙

💬 Why the Confusion?

Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, not a state, and that can make things a little tricky to understand.

Puerto Ricans:

  • Carry U.S. passports ✈️

  • Serve in the U.S. military with honor 🇺🇸🪖

  • Contribute to the nation’s culture, art, and innovation every single day 🎶

The difference is that they can’t vote for president in the general election and have limited representation in Congress — but make no mistake, their citizenship is 100% American.

🌟 Culture That Shaped America

From Rita Moreno (an EGOT winner) to Lin-Manuel Miranda, Jennifer Lopez, and Ricky Martin, Puerto Ricans have been shaping American culture through music, theater, cuisine, and dance for decades.

Our flags may look different, but our hearts beat together. ❤️🤍💙

📚 Family Activity Idea:

Try this with your kids this week:

  1. Look up a famous Puerto Rican who made U.S. history.

  2. Create a mini poster or fact sheet about them.

Share what you learned at dinner or in class — and celebrate the colorful diversity that makes America so special! 🎨✨
